Sketching Neptune at Marineland

It was breezy, cool and beautiful today: a perfect plein air painting day...what to paint, decisons, decisions...
A group of Sabal Palms conceal Marineland's beautiful garden.

The possibilities were endless here in this place...vegetation, statues, ocean, palms and  each other. But we took advantage of a certain model, who promised to stay very still for us for hours!

In studying our subject's features, Rita noticed a slight resemblance to Kirk Douglas! Can't argue with that!!
Like a stately apparition, he assumed a commanding pose in his garden of green!
Could it be an interesting cloud formation?

my version of Mary Lee at home among the palms
and it was so nice to see Dale back in the swing of things!
My 1st sketch; a nice King N. but a 2nd attempt definitely took on an evil look ! Yikes!

Along with a few love bugs, an exotic visitor kept us company! We'll be back !

Quick Draw Competition at Easels in Frederick

Calling all artists! Easels in Frederick, a plein air painting festival and competition, will hold a Quick Draw competition on Saturday, June 23, 2012, in Downtown Frederick, MD.

This fast-paced competition is open to all artists, professional and amateur alike.

Participants must be ages 16 and older. A registration fee of $10 gives competitors a chance at winning $1,000 in prizes. The juried Easels in Frederick artists are automatically entered into this timed paint-out, giving the other contestants a chance to paint alongside exemplary plein air painters.

Registered artists will check in and have their canvases or papers stamped between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Saturday and are then free to set up their easels and start painting anywhere within the prescribed area. Artists will have two hours to complete their paintings before placing them on display for judging and public exhibit. Judge Sara Linda Poly will announce the winners and prizes: First Prize, $500; Second Prize, $300; Third Prize, $200.  Plus, artists can sell their work straight off their easels during the exhibit.

Quick Draw is also a great spectator sport, as are the three days leading up to it when Easels in Frederick’s 30 juried artists will be painting in the heart of Downtown Frederick.

For more information about Easels in Frederick, the Quick Draw contest and the exhibits and sales on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, visit www.easelsinfrederick.org
Our site will host an announcement soon from a guest blogger by the name of Hanna Weaver.  This is in reference to a plein air event taking place in Frederick, Md in June. This may be of interest to many of our artists from FCAL who travel north , or who have already gone up there. Check back this week for details in her published post!
